Become a Lifeguard

Would you like to become a lifeguard and learn skills that could save a life?

If so, then look at these courses to start making that dream a reality.

- Bronze Star
- Bronze Medallion* (prerequisites: 13+ years or Bronze Star)
- Bronze Cross* (prerequisite: Bronze Medallion)
- Aquatic Emergency Care*
- National Lifeguard Service* (prerequisites: 16+years, Bronze Cross and a current Standard First Aid (AEC preferred)

* These courses are required. Junior Lifeguard and Bronze Star are recommended.

Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) /AED /O2» $200
This combined course provides exciting and comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR, as well as, aquatic specific skills such as spinal immobilization. This Standard First Aid
course is recommended for thoses who may respond to emergencies in an aquatic environment. Includes CPR-C certification. The AED portion builds on skills learned in CPR and first aid and participants learn about the heart and how to operate an AED. The O2 portion teaches the correct use of oxygen equipment and the benefits of oxygen.

National Lifeguard Service (NLS) » $290
NLS Pool builds on the skills you learned in the prerequisite courses and teaches you about prevention of emergency situations and how to respond effectively to resolve any emergencies which might occur.
Participants will learn safety supervision and rescues in a pool environment.
Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid/AEC
and a minimum of 16 years of age.

NLS/AEC Recert
These certifications are current for a period of two years from the date of the exam. This recertification exam retests all skill items as well as provides any updated information. Successful completion of this exam will extend the certification for another two years.

Become a Swimming and Lifesaving Instructor
Train to become a Lifesaving Swim Instructor by taking the following courses:

- Bronze Cross (prerequisite: Bronze Medallion)
- Swimming and Lifesaving Instructor - 40 hrs (15+ years and no other instructor certification)
- Swimming and Lifesaving Instructor - 30 hrs (15+ years and current Red Cross or YMCA Swim Instructor)

Swimming and Lifesaving Instructors

This one class will give you three certifications—Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor and Lifesaving CPR Instructor. Once finished, you’ll be set for a rewarding career teaching and evaluating the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life™, Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze and CPR award families. Topics cover teaching basic movement and swimming skills; strokes and fitness skills; and various approaches to teaching water rescue, first aid and related aquatic skills in these lifesaving programs.Prerequisites: Current Bronze Cross and 16+ years of age.
